Whenever you plan a home improvement project, hiring an expert is usually a smart choice — and flooring installation is no exception. Poorly installed floors can lead to problems like bubbling, gaps, or curling edges, which often require costly repairs later.

If you hire unskilled fitters, your new flooring may not last long. Getting it installed properly the first time saves time, stress, and money.

Still, if you prefer to handle projects yourself, it’s crucial to be patient, accurate, and detail-oriented. If you’re confident you can do that, here are some helpful tips to guide you through the process.

Floor Preparation Before Fitting

Every flooring type — vinyl, laminate, carpet, or tiles — has a different installation method, but all require steady hands and attention to detail. Flooring projects take time, so be patient and avoid rushing, as mistakes can be expensive to fix.

  • Gather all tools and supplies before you start
  • Plan your layout carefully, especially for tiles or patterned flooring
  • Double-check measurements to avoid cutting errors

Taking Accurate Measurements

Before installing new flooring, measure the entire area accurately. A simple sketch of the room layout helps you stay organised.

  • Measure the full length and width of the room
  • Note down alcoves, recesses or doorways
  • Allow a little extra for trimming and fitting errors

Out With the Old, In With the New

Once you’ve measured, remove the old flooring. Underneath, you’ll find the sub-floor — this base must be clean, smooth, and level before laying new flooring.

  • Clear away all debris and old adhesive
  • Check for damage or uneven areas and repair them
  • Ensure the surface is completely dry before continuing

Placing & Fitting the New Flooring

Each flooring type has its own fitting method, but a few key rules apply to all:

  • Cut the material slightly larger than the room size
  • Lay it out with around 75mm extra at the edges
  • Start along the longest wall and work across the room

Use the correct method for the flooring type — tack strips for carpet, adhesive for vinyl, and interlocking systems for laminate or engineered boards. Smooth and secure the flooring as you go, and trim only once it’s fully fixed in place. Cut neatly around door frames, cabinets, or other obstacles.

The Final Touch: Securing Your Floor

Once the flooring is laid, finish the edges neatly for a professional look:

  • Carpet: Tuck along skirting boards, trim 5mm above the base, and stretch to remove wrinkles
  • Vinyl/Laminate: Press firmly into glue or click joints securely, and let adhesives dry fully
  • Replace skirting boards or trims to lock the edges in place

When everything is secured and finished, your new flooring will transform your room with a clean, polished look.
